Besides providing the quality, trusted products you’ve come to expect from Sunsweet, we are also committed to a green future. As stewards of the world’s finest orchards for nature’s most super fruit, we are particularly focused on the environmental sustainability of what we produce. Moreover, our passion in this area often results in our leading innovation, rather than waiting for applicable practices to be developed by others.

First, we are careful not to waste any piece of fruit. We find ways to utilize all of the plums we receive from our orchards. Only large plums are pitted to become prunes. Smaller plums are combined with plums that fail to pit cleanly and are processed into juice. Our proprietary pitters make sure only a minimal amount of fruit flesh is removed, yielding the least amount of waste possible.

We also takes pride in utilizing every part of the fruit. The high antioxidant and protein-rich fruit skin and pulp extracted from its prune juice making process are used as fiber in our SupraFiber^® product. Even the pits are used as a completely natural feed for livestock or as a renewable fuel source. The remaining by-product goes to compost using no landfill space.

Our green efforts are not limited to how we treat the fruit itself. Here are some other ways in which we’re moving towards a greener future:

• Reducing the amount of packaging used in Sunsweet products
• Recycling all packaging waste, glass, PET, fiber and cans
• Utilizing energy-efficient lighting
• The steam power in our packing facility is food grade steam that is generated as a by-product of another neighboring company
• The flash heat technology in our new, proprietary D’Noir™ process for our organic prunes uses less energy than traditional, preservative- free retort methods, a great example of how unbeatable quality and reduced environmental impact can be realized if the right commitment is present
